If you are looking for a shipping company from Al Ain to Tunisia to move a villa with its majlis, carpets and large furniture, the usual way is a full 40 ft container loaded at the villa door in Al Ain, trucked to Khalifa Port or Jebel Ali, then shipped to Tunisia. At Al Basmah International Shipping we pack the majlis seating, carpets and chandeliers and load them in front of you. If you are heading to Djerba, the container usually lands at Sfax or Gabes, then continues south by truck and crosses to the island on the Jorf–Ajim ferry or along the Roman causeway on the El Kantara side. Sea transit is roughly four to six weeks port to port, and the road to Djerba adds a day or two after clearance. Tunisia is reached by sea or air only, with no road route; urgent parcels fly from Abu Dhabi or Dubai airport, and luxury cars ship after an eligibility check.

Your majlis to Djerba
- Method: a 40 ft or 40 ft high cube for villa furniture, a 20 ft for smaller homes.
- Sailing: Khalifa Port or Jebel Ali, after trucking the container from Al Ain.
- Arrival: Sfax or Gabes for Djerba and the south, Rades for the capital and north.
- The island: the truck crosses on the Jorf–Ajim ferry or the Roman causeway.
- Approximate time: 4–6 weeks by sea port to port, 3–5 days by air.
- Price: send the details on WhatsApp and you will get the price.
The majlis moves as it is
Arabic sofas, back cushions and floor mattresses are wrapped and numbered piece by piece so the majlis can be set up again easily.
Carpets rolled, never folded
Carpets are rolled on a tube and wrapped against damp; folding leaves marks that are hard to remove.
Djerba through the south
Landing at Sfax or Gabes shortens the road to the island compared with Rades.
Updates on WhatsApp
You hear from the team at loading, sailing, arrival, clearance and when the truck crosses to Djerba.
What we ship from Al Ain to Tunisia
Al Ain is a city of villas and spacious houses, and most shipments from here to Tunisia are whole homes of families who lived many years in the UAE. What sets them apart is the Arabic majlis, heavy carpets and large furniture, all of which need careful packing:
- Arabic majlis sets: long sofas, back cushions, floor mattresses, centre tables.
- Handmade and machine carpets of every size.
- Villa furniture: large bedrooms, tall wardrobes, twelve-seat dining tables.
- Chandeliers, lighting, antiques and large mirrors.
- Large appliances: double-door fridges, washers and dryers, ovens.
- Garden furniture, barbecues and outdoor children’s play sets.
- Luxury cars and 4x4s after an eligibility check.
- Urgent parcels and documents by air.
Pickup areas in Al Ain
We collect from every district of Al Ain. The container comes to the villa door if the street allows; if not, a smaller truck shuttles the furniture to the container at the nearest suitable spot:
- Al Jimi, Al Muwaiji and Al Mutawaa, with older and newer villas.
- Al Hili, Al Masoudi and Al Khabisi in the north and east.
- Zakher, Al Towayya and Al Foah in the south and west.
- Falaj Hazza, Al Maqam and the newer villa districts.
- Al Ain Industrial Area for businesses and workshops.
To visit us or drop off goods yourself, our branches are in Dubai – Deira, Port Saeed Street, and Sharjah – Industrial Area 18. If you live on the road between Al Ain and the capital, our guide to shipping from Abu Dhabi to Tunisia may also help.
Moving majlis seating, carpets and villa furniture by full container
An Al Ain villa usually fills a 40 ft container, and some large villas need a 40 ft high cube or two containers. We visit the house or ask for a video of each room on WhatsApp to estimate the volume before booking, since the majlis alone can take 6 to 12 m³ depending on the number of pieces.
| What is in the villa | Approximate volume | Suggested container |
|---|---|---|
| 3-bedroom villa with one majlis | 40–50 m³ | 40 ft |
| 4–5-bedroom villa with two majlis rooms | 55–65 m³ | 40 ft high cube |
| Large villa with garden furniture and a car | Over 65 m³ | Two containers, or one plus a separate car |
| Annex or small house | 20–28 m³ | 20 ft |
Packing the majlis
- Long sofas are wrapped in plastic, then blankets, with cardboard corner guards.
- Back cushions and floor mattresses go in clean sealed bags, each set numbered.
- Carved wooden tables travel in ISPM-15 treated wooden crates.
- We photograph the majlis before dismantling so it can be set up in Djerba exactly as before.
Packing carpets
- Carpets are cleaned and fully dried before rolling, since damp in a container for weeks causes mould.
- They are rolled on a tube, face inwards, wrapped in plastic with moth repellent.
- Valuable handmade carpets get their own line on the list with their size; ask the team about optional insurance.
Chandeliers and antiques
Chandeliers are taken apart and each crystal piece is wrapped separately, then placed in a padded wooden box. Antiques and large mirrors also go in crates and are loaded upright between soft items.

The sea route from Al Ain to Tunisia
Al Ain is inland with no port, so the container is loaded at the villa and trucked to Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi or to Jebel Ali, roughly two hours by road. From there the ship passes the Strait of Hormuz, the Arabian Sea, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean, and the container is often transhipped at an intermediate port before reaching Tunisia.
- Packing, loading and sealing at the villa door in Al Ain.
- Trucking the container to Khalifa Port or Jebel Ali.
- Sailing via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
- Transhipment at an intermediate port, usually in the Mediterranean.
- Arrival at Sfax or Gabes for Djerba and the south, or Rades for the north.
- Clearance, then the truck to your address.
Sfax or Gabes?
Sfax is one of the busiest ports in the south with frequent calls, and the truck from there to Djerba takes a few hours. Gabes is closer to the island, so when a suitable sailing goes there the inland leg is shorter, and the Jorf–Ajim ferry is then a short drive away. We do not pick the port by distance alone but by the available vessel and the transhipment time, and we send you both options when the difference in days is clear. If neither fits your dates, the container lands at Rades and the truck drives south: a longer run, but always possible.
Transit times from Al Ain to Tunisia
| Method | Approximate time | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sea, full container (FCL) | 4–6 weeks port to port + clearance | Villas and large households | Add a day or two for the road to Djerba |
| Sea, shared (LCL) | About 5–8 weeks | Under 14 m³ | Usually 1 m³ minimum |
| Air | 3–5 days door to door | Urgent documents and parcels | From Abu Dhabi or Dubai airport |
Air freight from Al Ain to Tunisia
We collect the urgent parcel in Al Ain and it flies from Abu Dhabi International or Dubai airport to Tunis–Carthage International Airport, or directly to Djerba–Zarzis International Airport if the island is your destination, or to Monastir or Enfidha. Allow three to five days door to door with clearance.
- Charged on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher; volumetric = L × W × H in cm ÷ 6000.
- Example: a 70×50×30 cm suitcase has a volumetric weight of 17.5 kg.
- Air does not suit furniture or large carpets.
- Lithium batteries, liquids, perfumes and liquid incense are restricted, so ask before packing.
- Send definitive-return papers by air before the container arrives.

Shipping luxury cars from Al Ain to Tunisia
Many of our Al Ain customers own large 4x4s or luxury cars and ask whether they can take them to Tunisia. The answer always starts with an eligibility check, because Tunisia applies strict rules to car imports. Tunisians living abroad have special regimes, including the FCR regime with tax advantages under conditions; otherwise there are limits on age and type, and large-engine cars may carry high charges. We quote no figures or years before studying your case.
A luxury car usually ships in a dedicated 40 ft container, strapped and chocked, which protects it from dust and salt better than RoRo, where the car is driven aboard uncovered. We photograph the car with you from every side before loading, note the mileage and send the photos on WhatsApp.
- Ask the team about optional insurance for a luxury car.
- The registration and export certificate must be in the owner’s own name.
- If the car is financed by a bank, the lien must be cleared first.

Documents you will need
Household furniture and personal effects
Passport, a copy of your UAE residence and a detailed, numbered contents list. A Tunisian living abroad who is returning for good can usually bring used furniture in once with exemption under the definitive-return procedure, with papers from the Tunisian consulate, a detailed list and within a set period. Foreign residents follow other rules, and the team checks your case before shipping.
Commercial goods
Importer registration in Tunisia, a commercial invoice, a packing list and a certificate of origin; GAFTA may apply to goods of Arab origin. VAT at the standard 19% and customs duties by tariff line.
Cars
Registration card (mulkiya), export certificate, the owner’s passport, any special entry-regime papers, and the purchase invoice on request.
Prohibited and restricted items
- Prohibited: narcotics, weapons and ammunition including unlicensed hunting guns, counterfeit goods.
- With authorisation: drones, some electronics, some medicines.
- Keep out of the container: gas cylinders, barbecue charcoal, fuel, perishable food.
Warning: Any valuable or unlisted item can stop the container at customs. List handmade carpets, antiques and electronics by name and number.
Before the container reaches Djerba: get the house ready
Many of our Al Ain customers ship to a villa they have built or bought in Djerba but not yet lived in. That is where small problems appear that can delay delivery if they are not sorted out in advance. We usually ask about them weeks before arrival:
- Is the house ready? If work is unfinished, the container may have to wait or the furniture go into temporary storage, and both cost money.
- Does the road reach the door? Some villas on the edges of the island sit on sandy or narrow tracks that cannot take a container truck.
- Who will receive it? If you are not in Djerba on the day, leave a family member’s number for the driver.
- Where does the majlis go? Choose the room in advance so the long sofas go straight in, not moved twice.
- Humidity and salt: island air is damp, so unwrap within a few days of delivery and do not leave carpets in plastic for long.
These questions look simple, but they decide whether delivery day takes a few hours or stretches over two days.

Tips for villa owners
- Start with the majlis and carpets; they take the most packing time.
- Measure the doors of the Djerba house before shipping long sofas.
- Empty and dry the fridges two days before loading.
- Do not ship garden plants or soil.
- Keep jewellery and original documents with you, not in the container.
A tip from the team: photograph the majlis from two angles before it is taken apart. Those photos save you hours when setting it up in your new home.
Delivery in Tunisia: Djerba, the south and other governorates
Djerba is an island, and the truck reaches it in one of two ways. The first is the ferry between Jorf on the mainland and Ajim on the island, the shorter way from Gabes. The second is the Roman road, a causeway that links the island to the mainland on the El Kantara side, which the truck reaches via Zarzis. When the ferries stop because of strong winds, the truck takes the Roman road. On the island itself some houses in Houmt Souk and Midoun sit in narrow lanes, so the large truck stops at the nearest point and the furniture continues in a smaller vehicle.

The same applies in other old medinas such as Sfax or Tunis: large pieces are carried by hand or on small carts from the entrance to the quarter.
| Governorate | Usual arrival port | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Djerba and Gabes | Sfax or Gabes | Then by truck south and across by ferry or the Roman causeway. |
| Sfax | Sfax | Direct arrival on many sailings. |
| Sousse, Monastir and Mahdia | Sousse or Rades | Depends on the sailing. |
| Tunis and Ariana | Rades | La Marsa, Carthage, Lac, El Menzah, Ennasr and Ben Arous. |
| Nabeul and Hammamet | Rades | About an hour by road. |
| Bizerte | Bizerte or Rades | North of the capital. |
If you would rather ship straight from Dubai’s port, our guide to shipping from Dubai to Tunisia explains how.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 40 ft container enough for an Al Ain villa?
Usually for a three-bedroom villa with one majlis. Larger villas need a 40 ft high cube or two containers.
How does the container get to Djerba?
It lands at Sfax or Gabes, then continues by truck and crosses to the island on the Jorf–Ajim ferry or along the Roman causeway.
How long does it take from Al Ain to Djerba?
Roughly four to six weeks by sea port to port, plus clearance and a day or two on the road to the island.
Can I ship a large 4×4 to Tunisia?
Possibly, after checking eligibility and the entry regime; it usually goes in a dedicated 40 ft container.
How are handmade carpets packed?
Cleaned, dried, rolled on a tube face inwards, then wrapped in plastic with moth repellent.
Which airport does an urgent parcel from Al Ain fly from?
Abu Dhabi International or Dubai, to Tunis–Carthage, Djerba–Zarzis, Monastir or Enfidha.
Can the villa furniture be split between Djerba and Tunis?
Yes. If part of the furniture is for the family home in the capital and part for Djerba, we ship two containers to two destinations, one to Rades and one to Sfax or Gabes, each with its own list. Putting everything in one container and splitting it in Tunisia means opening it at the port and an extra haul.
How will I know what stage my shipment is at?
The team sends you a WhatsApp update at loading, sailing, arrival, clearance and when the truck crosses to Djerba.
