If you need a shipping company from Abu Dhabi to Tunisia to move a whole villa, the usual method is a 40 ft container loaded and sealed at your door, leaving Khalifa Port for the port of Sousse or Rades via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, usually with transhipment at a Mediterranean port. The approximate time is 4 to 6 weeks port to port, then clearance and delivery to your home. The family car, often an SUV, goes by RoRo vessel after an eligibility check, and urgent documents fly from Abu Dhabi Airport to Tunis–Carthage in about 3 to 5 days. That is what Al Basmah International Shipping handles, from the first survey to unloading the last carton in Tunisia.

The villa container to Sousse
- A 4- or 5-bedroom villa with a majlis usually needs a 40 ft container, sometimes a 40 ft high cube.
- Loaded at the door, braced with straps and dunnage boards, and closed with a numbered seal recorded on the bill of lading.
- Leaves from Khalifa Port and arrives at Sousse or Rades, usually with transhipment.
- The SUV goes by RoRo after checking whether it qualifies for the FCR regime.
- Send the details on WhatsApp and you will get the price.
What do we ship from Abu Dhabi to Tunisia?
Abu Dhabi bookings to Tunisia differ from Dubai: homes are bigger and many are villas in the suburban cities, so the load is usually a full container rather than a shared one. We ship:
- Complete villa furniture: majlis sets, bedrooms, dining rooms, kitchens, garden furniture and large appliances.
- The family SUV or saloon.
- Commercial goods and equipment for Tunisian traders and investors.
- Small shipments in a shared container for flat residents.
- Urgent documents and parcels by air.
Abu Dhabi areas we collect from
Suburban cities
Khalifa City, Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Shakhbout City, Al Shamkha, Al Reef, Al Falah.
The island
Al Reem Island, Al Bateen, Al Khalidiya, Al Mushrif, Al Karamah, Al Zahiyah.
Residential islands
Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Al Maryah Island, Al Raha Beach.
Industrial and free zones
Mussafah, the KIZAD industrial zone near Khalifa Port, and Al Mafraq warehouses.
In Khalifa City, Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Al Shamkha the container usually parks right outside the villa, whereas towers on Al Reem Island and in Al Bateen need a move-out permit from building management and a booked service lift. We also collect from Al Ain and Al Dhafra, and Al Ain residents have their own guide: shipping from Al Ain to Tunisia.
How do we plan a whole-villa move to Tunisia?
We start with a survey, either a visit or a video in which you walk through the rooms. We calculate the volume of each room in cubic metres and ask what will not be shipped, because many families leave behind large furniture that will not suit their home in Tunisia. On that basis we decide:
- Standard 40 ft container: roughly 58 to 60 cubic metres of packed goods, enough for a medium villa.
- 40 ft high cube (HC): about 30 cm taller, useful for tall wardrobes and stacked majlis sets.
- Two containers, or one container plus a car by RoRo: for very large villas.
A five-bedroom villa usually takes two days: one for dismantling and packing and one for loading, sometimes three if there is a large library or many ornaments. We time the container’s arrival at your door so it stands for only a few hours, because a long wait adds charges.
Loading a 40 ft container: securing and bracing
On the way to Tunisia the container is lifted by crane at Khalifa Port, again at the transhipment port and again at Sousse or Rades, and it rolls at sea. An unsecured load shifts and breaks. So we work to fixed rules:

- Heaviest items first, on the floor and against the front wall: wardrobes, fridges, washing machines.
- Weight spread along the full length so the container does not lean on the truck or the crane.
- Loading in tight walls from floor to ceiling, each wall supporting the one behind it.
- Lashing straps tied to the container’s rings, with treated timber boards as dunnage between tiers.
- Airbags, or mattresses and soft cartons, to fill the last gaps near the doors.
- The final wall at the door is tied off so nothing falls when the container is opened in Tunisia.
The container is then closed and sealed in front of you with a numbered seal recorded on the bill of lading, and we send you a photo of the seal and the bill of lading number on WhatsApp. The seal is only broken at Tunisian customs, so if it arrives intact the container was not opened on the way.
Villa pieces that need special care
Abu Dhabi villas hold pieces you do not find in flats: long Arabic majlis sets with many cushions and mattresses, crystal chandeliers, marble tables, large mirrors, sometimes a piano, and garden furniture, umbrellas and children’s play sets. Chandeliers are dismantled piece by piece, each crystal wrapped and stored in a padded box. Marble tops travel standing on edge inside a timber frame, not flat, because marble cracks when carried horizontally with vibration. Majlis mattresses are compressed in plastic covers and used to fill gaps. Garden furniture is cleaned of sand and soil before loading, because customs does not like soil in containers.
Warning: Do not put flammable materials, gas cylinders or damaged batteries in the container, and do not hide items that are not on the inventory. These are the most common reasons containers are held.
From Khalifa Port to Sousse or Rades
Abu Dhabi containers usually leave from Khalifa Port, and sometimes from Jebel Ali depending on the available line. The route is by sea only: the Arabian Sea, then the Red Sea and the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean, then transhipment at a Mediterranean port onto a feeder vessel that reaches Tunisia. There is no road route from Abu Dhabi to Tunisia.
Transhipment means your sealed container comes off the mother vessel and waits for the feeder, which can take days. The container is not opened during transhipment, but the final date moves with it, which is why we always give the time as an approximate range and send you a WhatsApp update at transhipment and when the feeder arrives.
Count the full time from the survey day, not the sailing day: a few days to book the container and set its date, two or three days of packing and loading, waiting for the vessel at Khalifa Port, the voyage with transhipment, then clearance and delivery. A family planning to start the school year in Tunisia should start with us well before its flight date.
| Method | Approximate time | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full container 40 ft FCL | 4 to 6 weeks port to port + clearance | A whole villa, a large home with garden furniture | Sealed at your door; inspection covers only your goods. |
| Shared container LCL | Usually a week or more longer | A small flat or cartons | Per cubic metre, unpacked at a port warehouse. |
| Air | About 3 to 5 days door to door | Documents and urgent parcels | Actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher; not for furniture. |
Arriving at Sousse or Rades?
If your home is in Sousse, Monastir, Mahdia or Hammamet, it is better for the container to arrive at the port of Sousse when the shipping line calls there, as it shortens the road leg. If no suitable line serves Sousse, it arrives at Rades and goes down to the coast by truck in a few hours. The south is usually served from Sfax.
| Area | Usual arrival port | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tunis and Ariana | Rades | La Marsa, Carthage, Lac, El Menzah, Ennasr, Ben Arous. |
| Sousse and Monastir | Sousse or Rades | Sousse when the line calls there, otherwise by truck from Rades. |
| Sfax | Sfax | For the centre and south. |
| Nabeul and Hammamet | Rades or Sousse | Hammamet sits roughly between the two ports. |
| Bizerte | Bizerte or Rades | Depends on the line. |
| Djerba and Gabes | Usually Sfax | A longer road leg. |
What happens at the port on arrival?
When the ship berths at Sousse or Rades the container is moved to the yard and the broker files the declaration with the bill of lading, the inventory and the definitive-return papers. Customs decides on release on documents or inspection, and villa containers are often opened because they hold so many pieces. The seal is then broken in front of the customs officer and the contents compared with the inventory. After release and payment of port charges, the container leaves on a truck to your home. One late paper means chargeable storage days, which is why we complete the file before sailing.
Air freight from Abu Dhabi to Tunisia
From Abu Dhabi Airport to Tunis–Carthage, and sometimes to Monastir near Sousse, Djerba or Enfidha depending on the flight, a parcel usually arrives in 3 to 5 days door to door. We use it for school files, job-transfer papers, sale and rental contracts, and samples. The charge is on actual or volumetric weight (length × width × height in cm ÷ 6000), whichever is higher.
For villa moves we usually arrange a small air parcel that arrives weeks ahead of the container, holding what the family needs in the first month: clothes, a laptop and school papers. That way you can live in the house before all its furniture arrives.

- Perfumes, liquids and loose lithium batteries are restricted on aircraft.
- Furniture is not practical by air, as volume pushes the price up sharply.
- Every air parcel needs a list of its contents and values.
Shipping the family SUV from Abu Dhabi to Tunisia
Many Abu Dhabi families own a large four-wheel drive. Before booking it we check its eligibility, because a regular import into Tunisia carries very high duties, especially for large engines. A Tunisian returning for good can usually use the FCR regime if they have lived abroad continuously for at least two years and spent no more than 183 days a year in Tunisia during that time. The privilege is either a full exemption with restrictions on selling the car, or a partial exemption under which the owner pays about a quarter of the duties. It is personal and cannot be used for someone else’s car. The car’s age and engine type are checked against the rules in force, which is why we do not book before the review.

- RoRo: the car is driven up the ship’s ramp and lashed on deck, handed over empty of belongings and with little fuel.
- With the furniture: if a 40 ft container has room left and the procedure allows, the car is secured at the front with straps and chocks.
- Papers in Abu Dhabi: ownership, deregistration and export certificate, fines settled.
Documents required
Villa contents for families returning for good
A Tunisian living abroad who returns for good can usually bring in used household goods duty-free once, provided they meet a minimum period of residence abroad with limited days spent in Tunisia, and stay within a value ceiling set by customs. Foreign residents in Tunisia follow other procedures. What is usually needed:
- Passport and national identity card.
- Proof of residence in the UAE and its duration, plus definitive-return papers from the Tunisian embassy in Abu Dhabi or the consulate.
- A detailed inventory of every carton and piece, in Arabic or French.
- The bill of lading and the customs declaration.
Commercial goods
A registered importer in Tunisia, commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin; goods of Arab origin may benefit from the Greater Arab Free Trade Area agreement. Customs duties and VAT (standard rate 19%) apply.
Agree from the start who pays the freight, port charges, duties and transport to the warehouse, and never declare a value below the real one, as customs compares against reference prices.
The car
Ownership papers, export certificate, passport, and proof of residence abroad if it enters under FCR.
Prohibited and restricted items
Know before packing what cannot go in a villa container, because finding it at a Tunisian port means delaying the whole container.
- Prohibited: narcotics, weapons and ammunition, counterfeit goods.
- Permit required: drones, some electronics and communication devices, some medicines.
- Not shipped by sea: gas and flammable materials.
Shipping prices from Abu Dhabi to Tunisia
Send the details on WhatsApp and you will get the price: a video or photos of the villa, the area in Abu Dhabi, the governorate in Tunisia and whether there is a car. We reply with the suggested container size and what the price covers.
| What decides the price | Detail |
|---|---|
| Method | Full container, shared per cubic metre, or air by weight. |
| Container size | Standard or high-cube 40 ft, or two containers. |
| Volume | What you decide to leave in Abu Dhabi can save a second container. |
| Arrival port | Sousse, Rades or Sfax, and the distance to the house. |
| Packing and bracing | Dunnage and strap materials, and dismantling and assembly of majlis sets and wardrobes. |
| Papers | A definitive-return or commercial file, plus broker and port charges. |
| Car | RoRo or inside the container, its size and entry regime. |
The difference between one high-cube 40 ft and two containers is large, so we always try to fit the villa into one container with good stowage and by leaving out what is not needed. And watch out for storage charges at the arrival port if papers are late; they build up daily.

Delivery in Sousse and the Sahel
In Sousse, Monastir and Hammamet many villas are in newer districts that trucks reach easily. We agree the time with you after release, and the crew unloads the container, places each carton in its room by number and reassembles beds and wardrobes.
Villas in Hammamet and Monastir usually have wide entrances, but some coastal districts have streets too narrow for a container truck to stop, so we transfer to a smaller truck nearby and finish from there. Before delivery day we ask you to mark which room is which, so the crew puts every carton in the right place first time.

The medina of Sousse, like the old medinas of Tunis, Sfax and Kairouan, has lanes too narrow for a truck, so we move the goods to a small vehicle at the entrance and finish by hand. We also deliver to Tunis, Sfax, Nabeul, Bizerte, Djerba and Gabes.
Tips for moving a villa to Tunisia
- Decide what you will leave behind before the survey, not on loading day.
- Tell your community management when the container will stand outside the villa; some compounds require an entry permit for trucks.
- Disconnect outdoor AC units and water heaters the day before, and leave anything fixed to the walls for the crew to remove.
- Photograph valuable furniture and appliances before packing, and ask the team about optional insurance.
- Empty and dry fridges and washing machines two days ahead.
- Carry gold and original papers with you on the plane.
- Get the arrival home in Tunisia ready and give us an active Tunisian phone number.
If your house in Tunisia is not finished yet, ask us about the right shipping date instead of having the container arrive and wait at the port.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Abu Dhabi to Tunisia
Is a 40 ft container enough for a villa?
Usually yes for a 4- or 5-bedroom villa with ordinary furniture. Very large villas, or those with a lot of garden furniture, may need a high cube or two containers.
Which port does the container leave Abu Dhabi from?
Usually Khalifa Port, and sometimes Jebel Ali depending on the available shipping line.
Can the container arrive directly at Sousse?
If a line calls at Sousse, yes; otherwise it arrives at Rades and goes to Sousse by truck in a few hours.
What does transhipment mean?
Your sealed container moves from the mother vessel to a feeder vessel at a Mediterranean port without being opened. It adds days but does not touch the cargo.
Can I ship my SUV?
Yes, by RoRo or inside the container, after checking whether it qualifies for FCR or a regular import.
Is villa furniture exempt from customs?
For a Tunisian returning for good it is usually exempt once, if the conditions are met and the inventory is provided. The team reviews your case before booking.
What if I fly before the container arrives?
Leave an official power of attorney, signed at the consulate or embassy, for someone in Tunisia to receive it, so the container does not wait at the port.
How do I know the shipment’s stages?
The team sends you a WhatsApp update at loading, sailing, transhipment, arrival and release.
