Shipping to Australia is unlike shipping anywhere else, because biosecurity there is strict enough that a speck of soil on a trainer can hold up a whole container. If you are looking for a shipping company from UAE to Australia to move your furniture to Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, the usual way is a full or shared container from UAE ports to Australia’s main ports, or air freight for light items. Al Basmah International Shipping does more than pack and load: we prepare your belongings to pass biosecurity inspection with as little delay and cost as possible, through cleaning, sorting and an accurate list of what each item is made of.

This guide is written for people moving to Australia to live, work or study, and for anyone sending goods to a partner there. It covers what gets inspected, what gets refused, and how to clean your things before we arrive.
Clean items first
- Every outdoor item must be completely free of soil, grass and insects: bikes, shoes, garden tools, tents, outdoor furniture.
- Wooden, cane and wicker furniture is listed by material and checked for wood-borer holes.
- Put no food in the boxes, and no seeds, dried plants or pine-cone decorations.
- Complete Form B534 for unaccompanied personal effects and declare anything of concern.
- Number the boxes and note which ones hold declared items; it shortens the inspection.
- Any treatment or destruction required is at the owner’s expense.
Full container
A whole household in a 20 ft or 40 ft container, loaded at your door and inspected in full in Australia.
Shared container
For small volumes, priced per cubic metre, with inspection at the unpacking depot.
Air freight
For clothes, documents and light electronics you need on arrival.
Biosecurity preparation
Outdoor items cleaned, a materials list, and only treated wooden packaging.
What we ship from the UAE to Australia
We ship household furniture, belongings for families and students, and commercial goods, sorting out anything Australian biosecurity will worry about before packing rather than after.
- Household furniture: bedrooms, living and dining rooms, and rugs once they are thoroughly vacuumed.
- Outdoor items: bicycles, camping gear, garden furniture and barbecues, shipped only after careful cleaning.
- Sports equipment: weights, gym machines, rackets and studded football boots.
- Student belongings: books, a laptop and clothes; a shared or air shipment is usually enough.
- Commercial goods: once their import conditions are checked, as some products need a permit listed in BICON.
Collection from every emirate
We come to you in any emirate. We recommend cleaning outdoor items at least two days before collection so they are fully dry, because moisture in the container plus leftover soil invites mould.
| Emirate | Collection notes |
|---|---|
| Dubai | Book the service lift in towers in advance; our branch is in Deira on Port Saeed Street. |
| Sharjah | The Industrial Area 18 branch suits clients who want bikes and outdoor furniture washed and prepared before packing. |
| Abu Dhabi | Usually loaded from Khalifa Port, with the collection date set ahead. |
| Ajman and Umm Al Quwain | Close to the Sharjah branch and easy to add to shared loads. |
| Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah | Containers loaded at the door; Fujairah or Khor Fakkan may be used. |
| Al Ain | Goods are moved to Khalifa Port or Jebel Ali to meet the vessel. |
Sea freight from the UAE to Australia
There is no road route to Australia, so shipping is by sea or air. Containers sail from Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port, Sharjah and Khor Fakkan, or Fujairah across the Indian Ocean and usually call first at Fremantle in the west, then continue to Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane; some services tranship at an Asian hub. That is why Perth is often the quickest destination and Sydney and Brisbane the furthest.
| Arrival port | State | Usually serves |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney (Port Botany) | New South Wales | Sydney, Parramatta, Newcastle and Wollongong |
| Melbourne | Victoria | Melbourne and suburbs, Geelong |
| Brisbane | Queensland | Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast |
| Fremantle | Western Australia | Perth and suburbs |
| Adelaide | South Australia | Adelaide |
After arrival, the container goes to an approved inspection facility where biosecurity officers open it or check its contents against the list, an extra step that most other destinations do not have in this form.

Transit times from the UAE to Australia
Times are approximate, and in Australia you add biosecurity inspection, which can take from a few days to two weeks depending on how busy the facility is and what is found. You get WhatsApp updates at every stage.
| Method | Approximate time | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| FCL to Fremantle | About 15–25 days port to port | Families in Perth | Usually the shortest sea leg |
| FCL to Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane | About 25–40 days port to port | A full household | May tranship; add inspection and delivery |
| Shared LCL | About two to three weeks longer than FCL | Students and small volumes | Consolidation in the UAE, unpacking and inspection at an Australian depot |
| Air | About 4–8 days door to door | Clothes, documents, electronics | Air shipments of personal effects are inspected too |
Air freight from the UAE to Australia
Flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah reach Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, and air freight suits what you cannot wait weeks for: the family’s clothes, school and work papers, the laptop and basic kitchenware. The same biosecurity rules apply to air shipments; a dirty shoe in an air parcel stops it just as it would stop a container.
- Charging: length × width × height in cm ÷ 6000 gives the volumetric weight, and the higher of that and actual weight applies.
- Not for furniture: the volume makes the air price pointless.
- Restrictions: loose lithium batteries, liquids, perfumes and aerosols are restricted by air.
- For traders: samples and small parts by air, quantities by sea.

Cleaning and packing for biosecurity
This is the most important part of the guide. Australia’s Department of Agriculture requires belongings to be free of soil, plant and animal material and insects, and anything that cannot be cleaned or treated may be destroyed or re-exported at the owner’s expense. We split the preparation into two stages: what you do before we arrive, and what our crew does while packing.
Before collection: what you clean yourself
- Bicycles and strollers: wash the tyres, chains and under the mudguards with water and a brush until no mud remains.
- Garden tools: spades, shears and the lawn mower; drain the fuel and clean the blades and underside.
- Footwear: especially trainers and hiking boots with deep treads; clean the whole sole.
- Camping gear: tents, pegs and folding chairs; open the tent and shake out the sand.
- Barbecues: remove food residue, charcoal and grease.
- Rugs: vacuum both sides, and empty and clean the vacuum cleaner bag itself.
- Pet cages and fish tanks: washed and fully dried.
During packing: what our crew does
- We check the underside of wooden furniture for small holes or wood powder that point to borers, and tell you before packing.
- We record each item’s material on the list, “wooden chair”, “cane basket”, “rattan table”, because that is what inspectors look for.
- We never reuse boxes that held fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs or fertiliser.
- Any wooden crates we build are heat-treated to ISPM-15 and carry the treatment stamp.
- Clean shoes go in the same box as the item they are listed with, and we note the box numbers holding declared items.
- Desiccant bags, especially for Brisbane’s humid climate.

Warning: Hiding or failing to declare an item of concern can lead to prosecution in Australia, not just a fine. If you are unsure about something, declare it on Form B534 or leave it in the UAE.
Documents and Australian customs
Two bodies deal with your shipment: the Australian Border Force for customs, and the Department of Agriculture for biosecurity. We work with a licensed customs broker in Australia, but the decision on exemption, duty or treatment is theirs alone.
Personal effects and used furniture
Someone moving to live in Australia can usually bring used personal and household goods in free of duty and GST, provided they were owned and used before the move and are not for sale. The usual documents:
- Form B534 (Unaccompanied Personal Effects Statement), signed.
- A passport copy and the visa page or proof of residence.
- A detailed English packing list showing contents, material and box number.
- The ocean bill of lading or air waybill.
- The delivery address and an Australian phone number if you have one.
Commercial goods
Most imports attract Goods and Services Tax (GST) at 10% plus customs duty by tariff line, and commercial consignments worth more than AUD 1,000 usually need a full import declaration lodged by a customs broker. Some products, such as food, plant products and hides, need an import permit as set out in the BICON biosecurity database. You will typically need a commercial invoice, a packing list, a bill of lading, and the importer’s details and Australian Business Number (ABN) if they have one. Wooden packaging in commercial shipments must be treated and stamped.
Cars
Importing a car into Australia usually requires a vehicle import approval under the Road Vehicle Standards legislation before it is shipped, not after it lands. The car gets a thorough biosecurity inspection, underside, engine bay and wheel arches, and any soil means compulsory cleaning at extra cost. Australia also bans any part containing asbestos, which is checked on some older vehicles. So we review the VIN, year of manufacture and approval with you before any booking, and the car then goes by RoRo or in a container after a thorough wash.
Prohibited and restricted items for Australia
- Almost all food in unaccompanied effects, especially rice, pulses, spices and nuts covered by khapra beetle measures.
- Seeds, live and dried plants, dried flowers, and festive decorations containing plant material.
- Soil and sand, even as a desert souvenir.
- Wood with bark, and furniture infested with wood borers.
- Animal products: feathers, untreated skins, bones and some pet foods.
- Any product containing asbestos.
- Weapons, ammunition, some self-defence items, and medicines without a prescription.
Shipping prices from the UAE to Australia
The price changes between Perth and Sydney and between a full container and a shared one, and Australia adds charges other destinations do not have: biosecurity inspection fees, moving the container to the inspection facility, and any cleaning or treatment if soil or insects are found. Send the details on WhatsApp and get your price, and we will explain what it covers and what may be payable in Australia depending on the inspection. Ask the team about optional insurance.
Biosecurity inspection costs and how to reduce them
Inspection charges in Australia cannot be known exactly before the container arrives, because they depend on what the officer finds and how long the inspection takes. They are usually made up of fairly fixed items and variable ones:
- Usually fixed: the fee for lodging the biosecurity entry, moving the container from the port to the approved inspection facility and back, and the officer’s time.
- Variable: cleaning an item found with soil, fumigating a wooden piece with insects, or destroying food or plant material, all at the owner’s expense.
- Waiting costs: each day of delay at the facility can add storage or container detention charges.
The practical way to keep them down: a clear list of materials and box numbers, every outdoor item cleaned before packing, and declared items placed in specific boxes near the container door, so the officer does not have to unload the whole container to find one carton.
What decides the price of shipping to Australia?
| Factor | Effect on price |
|---|---|
| Sea FCL, LCL or air | Full container for lots of furniture, shared for small volumes, air for urgent items |
| Container size | 20 ft for a small to mid-size flat, 40 ft for a family home |
| Volume in cubic metres | The basis for a shared shipment price |
| Arrival city | Fremantle is quickest; Sydney and Brisbane are furthest |
| Packing and cleaning | Treated crates and pre-cleaning reduce the chance of treatment in Australia |
| Biosecurity inspection | Inspection and container transport fees; any treatment or destruction is at the owner’s cost |
| Car | Prior import approval, compulsory cleaning, and RoRo or container |

Tips and warnings before you ship
- If a bike or garden set is old and cheap, buying a replacement in Australia may cost less than cleaning, shipping and inspecting it.
- Do not ship desert souvenirs: sand in a bottle, firewood or palm fronds.
- Carved wooden pieces and cane are usually allowed but inspected; list them clearly.
- Australia runs on 230 volts with different plugs, so your appliances will usually work with a simple plug adapter.
- Keep original documents, gold and medicines in your personal luggage.
From experience: what holds up containers bound for Australia is rarely the furniture. It is trainers at the bottom of a box, or a vacuum cleaner whose bag was never emptied. Five minutes of cleaning saves days of waiting.
Delivery in Sydney, Melbourne and other cities
Most people arriving from the UAE settle in Sydney’s western and southern suburbs such as Parramatta, Liverpool and Bankstown, or in Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs, while others choose Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide. Apartment buildings usually require a service-lift booking and set loading hours, while detached houses allow the truck to park outside. In outer suburbs a smaller truck may be used where streets are narrow.
| City | Usual arrival port | Delivery note |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | Sydney (Port Botany) | Traffic sets delivery hours |
| Melbourne | Melbourne | Some older buildings have no lifts |
| Brisbane and the Gold Coast | Brisbane | Humid climate; moisture packing matters |
| Perth | Fremantle | Usually the shortest sea time |
| Adelaide | Adelaide | Relatively direct delivery from the port |
| Canberra | Sydney | An extra road leg from Sydney |
Temporary storage near your city can be arranged at extra cost if your home is not ready.
