The difference is not in the packing or the container but at customs: the first group usually pays duty and Spanish VAT on their belongings, while the second can be relieved if they meet the conditions. So we start by asking about your situation before we talk containers, then arrange the rest.

Holiday home or move of residence? The question that decides everything

Spanish customs applies EU rules, and relief from duty and VAT on used furniture is reserved for people transferring their normal residence to Spain. Furnishing a second or holiday home for someone who stays resident in the UAE usually falls outside that relief, so customs duty and Spanish VAT (IVA), 21% on the mainland, are paid on the value of the goods plus freight. The Canary Islands have a different tax system (IGIC), which we check separately if the shipment is going there.

That does not mean shipping holiday-home furniture never pays. Much of what is made or bought in the UAE, large wooden majlis sets, rugs, antiques, high-end bedrooms, costs more to replace in Spain than to ship with the tax. What we do is give you a clear picture: the shipping cost, an approximate duty estimate, and then you decide.

How to choose what is worth shipping to a holiday home

Before filling a full container, walk through your UAE home with a notepad. Pieces that are hard to replace, made-to-measure furniture, hand-woven rugs, antiques and paintings, are usually worth shipping. Cheap or heavy low-value items, flat-pack wardrobes and old mattresses, may be better bought in Spain once freight and tax are counted. Mattresses in particular suffer from humidity on a long voyage, and many people prefer to buy new ones there.

• Ship: made-to-measure furniture, hand-woven rugs, antiques and paintings, high-end wooden lounge sets, kitchenware you love.
• Think twice: cheap flat-pack wardrobes, old mattresses, old large appliances, furniture that does not fit the new villa.
• Measure first: the villa doors, stairs and garden paths, so nothing arrives that will not go in.

In gated communities in the UAE, ask the community management for a moving-truck access permit before collection day and check the permitted working hours; some communities do not allow loading at certain times.

Packing a villa and garden furniture for the Spanish climate

Southern Spain is hot and dry in summer, but the coast is humid and salty, and inland Madrid gets cold in winter. The sea voyage itself runs through heat and high humidity, so condensation forms inside the container. Our packing allows for that: fabric blankets for wood, bubble wrap for glass and marble, corrugated board on corners, wooden crates for valuables and moisture absorbers in the container.

• Outdoor sets are dismantled and each piece wrapped; cushions go in separate bags with a desiccant.
• Large parasols and their stone or metal bases are secured to the container floor.
• Marble and stone tables go in heat-treated crates stamped to ISPM 15.
• Electronics in their original boxes where possible, or double-protected.
• A numbered list for every box: what is in it and which room of the villa it goes to.

Sea freight to Spain: ports and containers

The container leaves Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port, Sharjah/Khor Fakkan or Fujairah and arrives at one of Spain’s big ports. Algeciras, at the Strait of Gibraltar, is one of the largest container ports in the Mediterranean and the closest to Marbella, Estepona and Málaga. Valencia is the usual port for Madrid and the east coast, about 350 km by road to the capital. Barcelona serves Catalonia, and Málaga has its own container terminal used by some lines.

• 20 ft container: roughly a two-bedroom flat, or part of a villa.
• 40 ft or 40 ft high-cube: a full villa with the garden set, or furniture plus a car.
• Shared container: for selected pieces rather than the whole home, priced per cubic metre.

Approximate times by method

These figures are approximate and change with the line, transshipment and port congestion, especially in summer. Add, as a rule, 3 to 7 days for clearance, then the inland leg.

Air freight to Spain for urgent boxes

When you reach the villa weeks before the container, you need a few things to get started: bedding, kitchenware, the season’s clothes, official papers. These fly from Dubai, Al Maktoum, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah to Madrid Barajas, Barcelona El Prat or Málaga, usually 3 to 7 days door to door including clearance.

• Priced on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher; volumetric weight = length × width × height in cm ÷ 6000.
• A golf bag or a bicycle takes up a lot of space, so its volumetric weight exceeds its actual weight.
• Lithium batteries, such as e-bike batteries, liquids and perfumes are restricted and checked before booking.
• Furniture does not suit air; the cost is far above sea.

Documents for shipping to Spain

The following is what usually applies; Spanish customs has the final word in each case, so our team reviews your papers before sailing. One missing document can hold a container at the port and run up storage charges.

Moving residence to Spain

The usual relief conditions: at least 12 consecutive months living outside the EU, the goods owned for at least 6 months and kept for the same use, presented to customs within 12 months of settling in Spain, and not sold, rented or lent for 12 months after entry. Alcohol, tobacco and non-portable work equipment are excluded.

• Passport copy.
• Foreigner identity number in Spain (NIE), and the residence card (TIE) for non-EU nationals.
• Municipal registration certificate (empadronamiento) at your Spanish address.
• Proof of residence in the UAE and its ending, such as the employment contract and its termination, tax certificates or a tenancy contract.
• A detailed inventory in Spanish or English with approximate values and purchase dates.

Holiday or second home

Usually a passport, an NIE and an inventory with sensible values, with duty and VAT paid at clearance. Realistic values matter: values set too low can lead to reassessment and delay, values set too high raise the tax for nothing.

Commercial goods

The importer needs an EORI number and a Spanish tax number, plus a commercial invoice, packing list and tariff code for each line. VAT is 21% on most goods, with reduced rates for some.

Cars

A car goes through customs, then technical inspection and registration in Spain; it may need EU conformity, and a registration tax based on emissions applies unless transfer-of-residence relief covers it, which usually requires the car to have been in your name and used for at least 6 months before the move. Typically needed: the title, the technical card, the purchase invoice and the UAE export certificate. We do not book a car until the team confirms eligibility. It travels by RoRo, driven onto the vessel, or inside a container with your furniture, with the tank nearly empty and the battery disconnected if required.

What cannot be shipped to Spain

• Meat, dairy and their products from outside the EU.

Delivery in Marbella and Madrid: villas, communities and cities

Villas on the Costa del Sol often sit in gated urbanisations on hillsides with narrow, steep roads, and some cannot be reached by a full container truck. In that case the container is unloaded at a nearby point and the goods are shuttled in a smaller truck. The owners’ community (comunidad de propietarios) may set access hours for removal trucks, and in summer those windows get tighter. Send us the route to the villa and photos of the entrance.

• Marbella, Estepona and Benahavís: mountain roads in some urbanisations; a medium truck works better.
• Madrid: the centre has a low-emission zone and busy streets, and some older buildings lack a suitable lift, so an external lift is used.

• Coastal flats: lifts are often small, so large pieces are dismantled or lifted via the balcony.
