If you live in Umm Al Quwain and need a shipping company from Umm Al Quwain to Algeria that will take a small load from your flat or room without making you pay for a whole container, the usual answer is shared sea freight: your things are measured in cubic metres, loaded with other shipments in a consolidated container, and delivered to Algiers, Blida or any other province. By sea it takes roughly 4 to 6 weeks port to port, then clearance and inland delivery; urgent parcels and documents go by air in about 3 to 6 days. At Al Basmah International Shipping we collect from your home in Umm Al Quwain, measure, pack, and send you updates on WhatsApp at every stage.

This guide is written for people shipping a little: a single person at the end of a contract, a couple in a small flat, or a family sending part of their home ahead of their return. You will find how to work out your cubic metres with real examples, what pushes the price up or down, the paperwork for a definitive return, and how to ship a small car if you decide to take it with you.
How many metres are you shipping?
- Shared sea freight (LCL) is priced per cubic metre, and the usual minimum is 1 m³.
- Ten medium boxes plus two large suitcases usually come close to 1 m³.
- A bedroom set with a fridge, a washing machine and kitchen boxes is usually around 5 to 8 m³.
- Sea for furniture and appliances; air only for urgent parcels and documents.
- Delivery to Blida usually goes through the port of Algiers, then by truck to the house.
- Send your list or photos on WhatsApp and the price comes back to you.
What we ship from Umm Al Quwain to Algeria
We ship whatever a person moving, or sending part of a home, needs: dismantled furniture, appliances, clothes and books, kitchenware, gifts for family, small traders’ goods, and cars once their import eligibility is confirmed. The point is that a small load does not need its own container, so you pay only for its real volume.
A single person’s things
Suitcases, boxes of clothes and books, a TV, a bicycle, sometimes a small desk and chair.
One-bedroom flat
Bed and mattress, a dismantled wardrobe, a sofa, a fridge and washing machine, and kitchen boxes.
Gifts and shopping for family
New appliances with invoices, clothes, perfumes (by sea, not air) and household items.
Small car or crossover
In a container or on a RoRo vessel, after checking the car is eligible for import.
Pickup areas in Umm Al Quwain
We reach most of the emirate and fix the time with you on WhatsApp; usually we collect on the same day we pack so the boxes do not sit in your home. Areas we work in often include:
- Al Salamah, Al Raudah and Al Maidan, with many small flats and older villas.
- Al Raas, the old town and the Umm Al Quwain corniche.
- Al Humrah and the areas along King Faisal Road.
- Falaj Al Mualla and the inland areas, with the time arranged in advance because of the distance.
- Emirates Modern Industrial Area and the Umm Al Quwain Free Trade Zone for goods or equipment.
If your building has no lift or you are on a high floor, tell us before the day, because it changes the number of workers and the loading time. If you live near the Ajman side, the Ajman to Algeria guide follows very similar arrangements.
How to work out your cubic metres
A cubic metre is length × width × height in metres. A box of 60 × 40 × 40 cm is 0.6 × 0.4 × 0.4 = 0.096 m³, so ten boxes of that size come to about one cubic metre. This helps you estimate before our team comes to measure, and the final measurement is taken after packing, because packing adds a few centimetres.
| What you ship | Approx. volume | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 10 medium boxes (60×40×40 cm) | About 1 m³ | The usual minimum for shared freight |
| Large suitcase | 0.15 – 0.2 m³ | Wrapped in plastic and sealed |
| Medium single-door fridge | 0.7 – 0.9 m³ | Emptied and dried a day before |
| Automatic washing machine | About 0.4 m³ | Drum fixed with transit bolts |
| Dismantled double bed with mattress | 1 – 1.3 m³ | The mattress takes most of the space |
| Three-seater sofa | 1.2 – 1.6 m³ | Legs removed to save space |
| Whole one-bedroom flat | 5 – 8 m³ | Depends on the number of boxes |
| Two-bedroom flat | 10 – 15 m³ | Here a 20 ft container may come close to the LCL price |
A worked example: a young man ships 12 medium boxes, two suitcases and a boxed TV. The boxes are about 1.15 m³, the suitcases about 0.35 m³, and the TV in its carton about 0.15 m³, roughly 1.65 m³ in total. Another: a couple in a one-bedroom flat in Al Salamah with a double bed, a wardrobe, a sofa, a fridge, a washing machine and 20 boxes, which comes to around 6.5 m³. In cases like this we sometimes suggest leaving out what is not worth shipping; a cheap wardrobe can cost more to ship than buying a similar one in Algeria.

When does a full container work out cheaper? Once you pass roughly 12 to 15 m³, the comparison is worth making. A 20 ft container holds about 25 to 28 m³ of packed furniture, is loaded at your door and sealed in front of you. See the details in the main UAE to Algeria guide.
The sea route from Umm Al Quwain to Algeria
There is no practical road route from the UAE to Algeria, so shipping is by sea or by air. Your things go from Umm Al Quwain to the consolidation warehouse, then to Sharjah port or Jebel Ali depending on the sailing, through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean, often via a transhipment port where the container changes vessel, and then to Algiers, Oran, Annaba, Bejaia or Skikda.
- Collection, packing and measuring at your home in Umm Al Quwain.
- Consolidation at the warehouse with other loads for the same Algerian port.
- Loading into the shared container and sailing from a UAE port.
- Transhipment at an intermediate port where needed, then arrival in Algeria.
- Unloading of the shared container and customs clearance of each shipment in its owner’s name.
- Trucking to your province and delivery to the house.
Shared freight usually takes a few more days than a full container, because the shared box does not close until it is full and because in Algeria it is unloaded in a warehouse before the shipments are separated. So do not send anything by LCL that you need on a fixed date.
Transit times: full container, shared freight and air
| Method | Approx. time | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sea, full container (FCL) | 4 – 6 weeks port to port + clearance | A whole home, a car with furniture | Loaded at your door, sealed, not opened until customs |
| Sea, shared (LCL) | About 5 – 7 weeks + clearance | Small loads from 1 m³ | Priced per m³; may wait for the container to fill |
| Air | About 3 – 6 days door to door | Urgent parcels and documents | Charged on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher |
These times are always approximate. They depend on sailings, transhipment, port congestion and how quickly the paperwork is complete. Public holidays in Algeria and the UAE also slow clearance, so allow for that if your return is close to Eid.
Air freight from Umm Al Quwain to Algeria for urgent parcels
If you need something quickly, such as documents, a laptop, permitted prescription medicines or clothes for an occasion, air freight is the way. We collect the parcel in Umm Al Quwain and it flies from Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi to Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers, or to Oran and Constantine, usually arriving in 3 to 6 days door to door including clearance.

Air is charged on actual weight or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. Volumetric weight = length × width × height in cm ÷ 6000. A 60 × 50 × 40 cm box counts as 20 kg even if it actually weighs 8 kg, so for air we choose a box that fits the contents.
- Air does not suit furniture or large appliances; the cost often exceeds their value.
- Loose lithium batteries, liquids and perfumes are restricted by air; perfumes go by sea.
- Describe contents and value clearly on the invoice; vague descriptions hold parcels at customs.
Shipping a small car or crossover from Umm Al Quwain
Many people sending a small load ask about their car too. Before any booking we check whether the car is eligible for import into Algeria, because Algerian law sets conditions for citizens importing used cars, related to the car’s age and engine type, and these conditions change from time to time. So we send you on WhatsApp what applies to your car and the expected cost before you pay anything.

If the car is eligible, there are two ways: a RoRo vessel, where the car is driven aboard, or a container, where it is fixed with straps and wheel chocks. A container suits a crossover well because it protects the paint from damp and salt, and sometimes a few boxes can go with it if the procedure allows. Before the car goes into the container we photograph it from every side with you present: bumpers, wheels, glass, odometer and any old scratch. The photos are sent to you on WhatsApp and serve as the reference on delivery.
- Empty the car of personal items that are not declared, and leave a quarter tank of fuel or less.
- Prepare the registration card, passport and export papers from the UAE authority.
- Do not stick anything on the glass or cover the car if it will be driven onto a RoRo vessel.
Packing a small load
A shared shipment is handled more than a full container: to the warehouse, into the container, unloaded in Algeria and loaded again. So we pack it to take that handling:
- New double-wall boxes in a few repeated sizes, because they stack firmly.
- Paper for glass and plates, with heavy things in small boxes.
- Appliances wrapped in bubble wrap then cardboard, with fridge and washer doors secured.
- Boxes grouped on a wooden pallet and stretch-wrapped so they do not scatter in the warehouse; the wood is heat-treated to the ISPM 15 standard.
- Your name, number and province on every piece, numbered to match the contents list.
Documents
Personal effects and used household goods
A passport copy, a detailed contents list in Arabic or French (we help you write it), a delivery address and an Algerian phone number. An Algerian citizen returning for good after living abroad can usually bring used household goods in with a one-time customs exemption under the change-of-residence procedure, with a consulate certificate, a detailed list and within a set period. Our team checks your case before shipping.
Commercial goods
Commercial imports into Algeria are tightly regulated: the importer must be in the commercial register with a tax identification number, and some goods need prior authorisation. Customs duties and VAT (TVA, standard rate 19%) apply. A commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin when requested.
Cars
Registration in your name, passport, export certificate and any document Algerian customs asks for in your situation. We do not book a car before checking its eligibility.
Prohibited and restricted items
- Narcotics, weapons and ammunition: strictly prohibited.
- Counterfeit goods: seized, and the owner may be held liable.
- Drones and some wireless devices: need prior authorisation.
- Medicines: personal quantities with a prescription; some need a permit.
- By air: loose lithium batteries, flammable liquids and perfumes.
Warning: Do not hide anything among clothes or inside appliances. Shared containers are inspected, and one undeclared item delays everyone’s shipment and may hold yours on its own.
Prices from Umm Al Quwain to Algeria
Shared sea freight starts from the minimum volume, usually one cubic metre, and rises with your metres. Air starts from the lowest parcel weight, and a full container has a set price by size and port. For all of these: send the details on WhatsApp and the price comes back to you.
What decides the price
| Factor | How it affects the price |
|---|---|
| Method: sea FCL, LCL or air | LCL per m³, FCL per container, air per kg |
| Container size | 20 ft for most flats, 40 ft for large homes or furniture with a car |
| Shared-load volume | Every extra metre is added; sorting before shipping saves money |
| Port and province | Delivery far from the arrival port adds inland transport |
| Packing | Pallets and wooden crates for delicate pieces add cost |
| Documents | Commercial shipments take longer clearance than personal effects |
| Car | RoRo or container, the car’s size, and charges in Algeria |

Delivery in Algeria: provinces and ports
| Region | Usual arrival port | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Algiers and Blida | Port of Algiers | Blida is a short drive south of the capital |
| Oran and Tlemcen | Port of Oran | Western Algeria |
| Constantine and Setif | Skikda, Bejaia or Annaba | Depends on the vessel’s route |
| Annaba | Port of Annaba | The east and the eastern border |
| Bejaia and Tizi Ouzou | Bejaia or Algiers | Mountain areas that need smaller trucks |
| The south (Biskra, Batna and beyond) | Algiers or Skikda, then a long road haul | Longer inland transit |
Delivery in Blida
Blida is one of the places we most often ship small loads to, because many families live there in two- or three-storey family houses shared by parents and married sons. The shipment usually lands at the port of Algiers and is trucked to Blida. Ask your family before arrival: can a medium truck enter the street? Does the floor you are going to have a narrow staircase? These details decide whether we send a small truck or need extra porters.

In Algiers, especially El Biar, Hydra and Kouba, and in Constantine, streets are steep and sometimes narrow, and a large truck may not reach the building door. Then the goods are moved to a smaller vehicle or carried a short distance by hand, and we tell you in advance.
Paperwork for a definitive return
If you are going back for good, get the change-of-residence certificate from the Algerian consulate before shipping, because the exemption for used goods usually depends on it and on a set period after your return. Send us a copy with your list and we check that the descriptions match what is in the boxes.
Tips and warnings before you ship
- Sort before you measure: old books and cheap furniture add volume for nothing.
- Do not fill big boxes with books; heavy items in small boxes, light items in big ones.
- Photograph appliances working before they are packed.
- Keep documents, gold and valuables with you on the plane.
- Ask the team about optional insurance if your appliances are valuable.
- Do not book your return flight around the sea arrival date; leave a margin.

Frequently asked questions
What is the smallest volume I can ship from Umm Al Quwain to Algeria by sea?
For shared freight the minimum is usually one cubic metre, even if your things are less. So if you have only half a metre, consider adding what you need, or air freight if the items are light.
How long does a small load take to reach Blida?
Roughly 5 to 7 weeks by shared sea freight, including waiting for the container to fill and transhipment, then a few days for clearance and trucking from the port of Algiers to Blida.
Can I ship just a fridge and a washing machine?
Yes. A medium fridge and a washing machine together come to about 1.2 m³. They are wrapped, the doors are secured, and they go as shared freight.
Is air freight good for suitcases of clothes?
It suits a few suitcases that are urgent. For more than two or three, sea is far cheaper, because a large suitcase has a high volumetric weight.
Can I ship my car with my things?
It is possible in one container if the car is eligible for import and the procedure allows it. We check the car’s conditions first and send you the cost before booking.
Do I pay customs on my used things?
If you are a citizen returning for good and complete the change-of-residence procedure, there is usually a one-time exemption. Otherwise duties may apply as customs decide, and the team checks your case.
How will I know where my shipment is?
The team sends you updates on WhatsApp at collection, loading, sailing, arrival, clearance and delivery.
Do you collect from Falaj Al Mualla?
Yes. We arrange the time in advance because it is far from the town centre, and collection is from your door.
