Abu Dhabi is the emirate closest to the Saudi border, so the shortest road from the UAE to Riyadh starts here. We collect your household goods, the family cars or your cargo from your address in Abu Dhabi; the truck heads west to the Al Ghuwaifat crossing and Al Batha on the Saudi side, then through Al Ahsa to Riyadh. Door delivery usually takes about 2–4 days including customs clearance. Al Basmah International Shipping has two branches, in Dubai (Deira – Port Saeed Street) and Sharjah (Industrial Area 18); the team comes to your address in Abu Dhabi, and everything is booked on WhatsApp at +971557643821, at any hour.

What matters from the start
- Abu Dhabi to the border takes roughly 3–4 hours, the shortest drive to Saudi Arabia of any major UAE city.
- Delivery in Riyadh, Al Kharj and Diriyah takes about 2–4 days; a shared load may wait a few extra days until the truck is full.
- The family cars can travel together in a two-deck enclosed carrier, starting from AED 4,100 per car.
- Household furniture in a shared truck starts from AED 90 per cubic metre; small parcels from AED 45.
- Container cargo in Mussafah or KIZAD can be unpacked in Abu Dhabi and loaded onto a truck that reaches your Riyadh warehouse door.
- The team sends you a WhatsApp message at every stage until delivery.
Why is the Abu Dhabi–Riyadh road the shortest?
Because the truck does not have to cover the distance from the northern emirates down to the capital; it starts in the capital. It leaves Abu Dhabi heading west on the E11 through Al Dhafra past Al Ruwais, then Al Sila, reaches the Al Ghuwaifat crossing, crosses to Al Batha, and takes the road to Hofuf and then Riyadh. A truck coming from Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah, by contrast, needs 4–6 hours just to reach the border.
Starting point
Abu Dhabi Island, the suburbs, Mussafah, or Al Ruwais and Madinat Zayed in Al Dhafra.
The border
Al Ghuwaifat on the UAE side, Al Batha on the Saudi side, with clearance on the Fasah platform.
Inside the Kingdom
Al Ahsa (Hofuf), then Riyadh, and on to Al Kharj or Diriyah when needed.
Delivery
To the door of a home, compound or warehouse, on an appointment arranged in advance.
If you are heading to Dammam, Jeddah or another city, all cities are covered in the Abu Dhabi to Saudi Arabia shipping guide. Here we stay with Riyadh: how a home, cars and cargo get there, and what to expect on arrival.
Transit times from Abu Dhabi to Riyadh
About 2–4 days from collection to delivery, clearance included. On a dedicated truck that leaves on loading day, arrival is usually towards the start of that range; a shared load may wait a few days before setting off. Approximate times by type of destination:
| Where in Riyadh? | Mode | Approximate time | Have ready |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home in the north (Al Narjis, Al Yasmin, Al Malqa) | Road — dedicated or shared truck | 2–4 days | Exact address and truck parking space |
| Villa or flat in the east or west (Al Rawdah, Al Nahda, Dhahrat Laban, Irqah) | Road | 2–4 days | Lift booking in apartment buildings |
| Residential compound | Road | 2–4 days | Gate permit with truck and crew details |
| Second Industrial City or Al Sulay | Road — trailer or 10-ton lorry | 2–4 days | Invoice, packing list, certificate of origin |
| Al Kharj and Diriyah | Road | 2–4 days | A shared load may add a day |
| Riyadh Dry Port | Sea from Khalifa Port to Dammam, then rail | 2–3 days sailing + handling and clearance | For commercial containers |
| King Khalid International Airport | Air from Abu Dhabi airport | 1–3 days | Weight and dimensions |
What do we move from Abu Dhabi to Riyadh?
- Household furniture: complete villas and flats, bedrooms and children’s rooms, majlis seating, kitchens and appliances.
- Family cars: one car or several, on an open carrier or in a two-deck enclosed carrier.
- Commercial goods: stock that arrives in Abu Dhabi in containers and goes on to Riyadh by truck, or goods stored in Mussafah and KIZAD warehouses.
- Parcels: a few boxes and personal items, added to a shared truck.
- Equipment: light machines and devices, office and worksite equipment.
Moving a family from Abu Dhabi to Riyadh: start with the children’s rooms
In a family move, the children’s rooms decide how the first days in Riyadh go. A child who finds their own bed and toys on the first night settles faster, and the parents are free to deal with the rest of the house. So we pack the children’s rooms last in Abu Dhabi and load them at the back of the truck, which makes them the first things off in Riyadh.

Beds and wardrobes
Cots, bunk beds and wardrobes are dismantled, their screws bagged, numbered and taped to the piece itself, and photographed beforehand so they go back together exactly as they were. Mattresses are sealed in plastic bags to keep road dust out.
Toys, bikes and games consoles
Small toys are boxed by child, bikes lose their front wheel or handlebars to take less space, and consoles and screens get padded wrapping. School books and files the new Riyadh school will ask for belong in a bag that travels with you, not in the truck.
The first-night box
Prepare a box for each child with two days of clothes, a toothbrush, their favourite toy and their bedding. Write their name on it clearly, and we will bring it in with their bed.
Warning: Child car seats cannot stay inside a shipped car, because cars travel empty of personal belongings. Pack them with the household goods in the truck.
Abu Dhabi areas we collect from
The team comes to any address in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Most Riyadh-bound orders come from:
- Abu Dhabi Island: Al Khalidiyah, the Corniche, Al Mushrif, Al Bateen, Al Zahiyah.
- Islands and new waterfronts: Al Reem Island, Saadiyat, Yas, Al Raha Beach.
- Family suburbs: Khalifa City, Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Shakhbout City, Al Shamkha, Baniyas.
- Industrial areas: Mussafah, ICAD (Industrial City of Abu Dhabi) and KIZAD near Khalifa Port.
- Al Dhafra: Al Ruwais and Madinat Zayed, already on the way to the border.
If you live in Al Ain, its road is slightly different; see the Al Ain to Riyadh shipping guide.
Shipping the family cars to Riyadh in a two-deck enclosed carrier
A family leaving Abu Dhabi often has more than one car: an SUV for the family and a smaller car for work. Instead of shipping each one separately, they can be loaded together in a two-deck enclosed carrier, each car covered with its wheels strapped down, so they all reach Riyadh on the same trip, protected from dust and sun.

Documents for each car
- The registration card and the owner’s passport and ID.
- An export certificate and plate surrender through the competent Abu Dhabi authority, usually requested via the TAMM platform.
- The car must be no more than 5 years old from its model year, counted without the current year.
- If the cars are registered to different people (husband and wife, for example), each car needs its own owner’s papers.
- Special cases, such as a financed car or one registered to a company, are checked with the team before booking.
If the cars are ordinary and need no special protection, an open multi-car carrier costs less: a sedan starts from AED 2,000 and an SUV from AED 2,750.
Commercial cargo: from a container in Abu Dhabi to a Riyadh truck
Many traders import goods in containers that land at Khalifa Port, then need them in their Riyadh shops or warehouses. The usual answer is transloading in Abu Dhabi’s industrial zones: the container is opened in a warehouse in Mussafah, ICAD or KIZAD, the goods are palletised and wrapped, then loaded onto a trailer or lorry that crosses the border and pulls up at your Riyadh warehouse door.

This works well when one container has to be split between several Riyadh destinations, or when not all of it is going to Saudi Arabia. And since the truck drives straight to the Second Industrial City or Al Sulay, there is no extra haulage to arrange from a port or terminal.
Saudi clearance requirements
- Clearance is electronic through the Fasah platform.
- A commercial invoice (certified when requested), a packing list and a certificate of origin.
- A SABER conformity certificate for many consumer products; SFDA requirements for food, cosmetics and medicines.
- A commercial registration for the consignee in Riyadh.
- Origin matters: goods of UAE origin with a GCC certificate of origin are exempt from customs duty, while foreign-origin goods that arrived in a container are treated according to their origin. 15% Saudi VAT applies on imports.
When does sea freight make more sense?
Full containers that will not be opened in Abu Dhabi can sail from Khalifa Port to King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam in about 2–3 days, then go by rail to Riyadh Dry Port, plus handling and clearance time. For medium loads and deliveries split across several Riyadh points, road is still faster.
Air freight from Abu Dhabi to Riyadh
When time matters more than cost, light items fly from Abu Dhabi airport to King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, usually in 1–3 days including clearance. It suits official papers, samples, urgent spare parts, and a bag of things a family member needs before the truck arrives.

- It is charged on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher, so it does not suit large furniture.
- Lithium batteries, liquids and perfumes are restricted on flights.
- Send the weight and dimensions on WhatsApp and the price comes back to you.
Arriving in Riyadh: entry, unloading and reassembly
Large trucks may only enter Riyadh at set times, so the team calls you before arrival to agree the delivery hour. If the street is narrow or the building has no loading area, the load moves to a smaller truck for the last stretch.
- Compounds: need a gate permit arranged in advance with compound management; send us the gate contact’s name.
- Villas: pieces go to their rooms by label, and beds and wardrobes are reassembled if agreed when booking.
- Apartment buildings: ask the landlord about the lift and permitted moving hours before the date.
- Warehouses: have someone to receive and sign, and a forklift if the pallets are heavy.
At the end, the boxes are checked against the contents list with you, number by number, and any remark is noted on the spot.
Packing for the desert road and Riyadh heat
Heat is the main enemy on this road, especially in summer when Riyadh is very hot. Things that melt or spoil in heat, such as candles, cosmetics and some foods, are best not shipped at all, or packed separately. Electronics get padded wrapping, glass gets corner guards, sofas go in plastic film over a blanket, and every plate and glass in the kitchen is wrapped in paper.
Don’t keep the fridge full and running until the morning of loading. Switch it off a full day before, dry it and leave the door open so it doesn’t reach Riyadh smelling damp.
Documents required
| Shipment type | Documents |
|---|---|
| Personal effects and used furniture | Copy of the owner’s passport and Saudi ID, iqama or residence visa, and a detailed contents list in Arabic or English; new items in commercial quantities are dutiable |
| Commercial goods | Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, SABER or SFDA depending on the product, and the consignee’s commercial registration |
| Cars | Registration, export certificate and plate surrender, the owner’s passport and ID, and the car empty of belongings |
Items that cannot enter the Kingdom
- Narcotics, alcohol and pork products.
- Weapons and ammunition without permits.
- Counterfeit goods and gambling tools.
- Drones and some medicines need prior permits; tell the team before packing.

- Choosing a dedicated truck over a shared one, or an enclosed carrier over an open one.
- Volumetric weight on parcels and air freight.
- Difficult access: a high floor with no lift, or a smaller truck needed inside Riyadh.
- The type of goods: SABER and SFDA requirements need extra preparation.
- Shipping the cars in the same week as the furniture makes both appointments easier to arrange together.

Mistakes that keep happening on Abu Dhabi–Riyadh moves
- Leaving things inside a shipped car; it is turned back or delayed until emptied.
- Booking the delivery date before getting the Riyadh house keys or the compound permit.
- Shipping heavy old appliances that cost more to move than they are worth; compare before the survey.
- Forgetting to remove air conditioners, curtains and fixed lights before loading day.
- Sending commercial goods without SABER or a certificate of origin, so they are held at the border.
