Shipping Company from UAE to the UK +971557643821: Household Moves and Car Shipping by Sea and Air to London and Every UK City

Shipping Company from UAE to the UK Household Moves and Car Shipping by Sea and Air to London and Every UK City
Guide summary

Household moves, personal effects and car shipping from every emirate to London, Manchester, Birmingham and all UK cities, by sea to Felixstowe and Southampton or by air, with help on ToR1 relief paperwork and delivery to your door.

If you are moving your home from the UAE to London, Manchester or any UK city, you need a shipping company from UAE to the UK that knows three things well: the British ToR1 relief paperwork, packing that copes with damp, and how furniture reaches a house on a narrow street where a truck cannot stop. Al Basmah International Shipping collects from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Al Ain, and ships by sea in a full or shared container to Felixstowe, Southampton and London Gateway, or by air to Heathrow and Manchester for urgent shipments. Sea usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks port to port, and air roughly 3 to 6 days door to door. Send the details on WhatsApp and you will receive the price.

Your UK move paperwork

  • Submit the ToR1 relief application to UK customs before the container ships, and keep the reference number.
  • Usual conditions: 12 consecutive months living outside the UK, and owning and using the items for at least 6 months.
  • Goods arrive within 12 months of settling, and are not sold, lent or hired out within 12 months.
  • Alcohol and tobacco are not relieved, and goods from a second home do not qualify.
  • A car needs a NOVA arrival notification and registration with the vehicle licensing agency after arrival.
  • The team sends you updates on WhatsApp at every stage.

What we ship from the UAE to the UK

Most of our UK shipments are the homes of families returning after years in the Gulf, or employees moving to a job in London or Birmingham. We also ship commercial goods for companies with a registered UK importer, and cars once we have confirmed they can be registered there.

  • A full household or part of one, with dismantling, packing and reassembly.
  • Personal effects, books, clothes and children’s toys.
  • Electrical appliances: the UK and the UAE use the same three-pin plug and a near-identical voltage, so your appliances work there without adapters.
  • Commercial goods by full container or per cubic metre.
  • Cars by RoRo or inside a container after an eligibility check.
  • Urgent documents and parcels by air.

ToR1 transfer of residence relief: the key step before shipping

The UK is outside the EU customs union and has its own scheme for people moving there, called Transfer of Residence or ToR. The idea is simple: your used belongings usually enter free of customs duty and of the 20% VAT, provided you obtain UK customs approval before the container ships, through the online ToR1 application. Once approved you receive a reference number that goes on the customs declaration at arrival. Anyone who ships first and applies later may pay the VAT and then wait for a refund, which is what we avoid by sorting the paperwork before loading.

Who usually qualifies?

  • Anyone who lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months before the move, regardless of nationality, whether a returning Briton or a new resident.
  • The goods belong to you and you used them for at least 6 months before the move.
  • You use them in the UK for the same purpose as in the UAE.
  • They arrive within 12 months of starting to live in the UK, in one or several consignments.
  • You do not lend, hire out, pledge or transfer them within 12 months of moving.

What the relief does not cover

Alcoholic drinks, tobacco and tobacco products, commercial vehicles, non-portable trade equipment, and goods from a second or holiday home. Companies and organisations do not benefit; the relief is for individuals only. Restricted goods such as firearms and protected species still need their licences even when they are part of your belongings.

Documents the team will ask for

  • A copy of your passport, and your UK entry visa if you are not British.
  • Proof of 12 months living in the UAE: residence visa, tenancy contract or an employer letter.
  • Proof of your UK home: rental or purchase contract, or the new job contract.
  • A detailed inventory in English, numbered to match the cartons.
  • The ToR1 approval number before sailing.

Note: The final decision on relief rests with UK customs. We check your papers and help you put them in order, but nobody can guarantee relief in advance, and one missing document can mean paying VAT on the whole shipment.

Situations we see often

The family that flies before the container: this is the usual case. You pack the house and load the container a few days before you travel, you fly out, and the container arrives weeks later. What matters is that the ToR1 application is in before sailing and that you have a UK address for the paperwork, even temporary accommodation; we update the delivery address once you settle.

The employee who moves alone first: in some families one parent starts the job first while the rest stay in the UAE until the school year ends. Two shipments may suit best: a small shared shipment with what the employee needs, then the household container later. The relief allows goods to arrive in several consignments within 12 months, as long as they are declared in the application.

Someone who owns a UK property but has not lived in it yet: if the house will become your main home, relief is possible; if it is a holiday home you visit while your residence stays in the UAE, it is not usually relieved and duty and VAT are due. We explain the difference before you decide on the volume.

Collection from every emirate

Emirate Notes
Dubai Book the service lift and get building management approval in towers before packing day.
Abu Dhabi and Al Ain One appointment for packing and loading, exporting via Khalifa Port or Jebel Ali.
Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain Our branch in Industrial Area 18 makes consolidation for shared shipments easy.
Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah Full containers are scheduled in advance; Fujairah or Khor Fakkan may be used.

Sea freight to the UK: Felixstowe, Southampton and London Gateway

The container leaves Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port or Khor Fakkan and usually arrives at one of three big British ports. Felixstowe on the east coast is the largest and serves London, the east of England and the Midlands; Southampton on the south coast is close to southern and western England; and London Gateway on the Thames is closest to the capital. For the north-west and Scotland, Liverpool may be an option depending on the line.

Full container or shared?

A 20 ft container usually fits a two- or three-bedroom flat, and a 40 ft a villa. But be careful: British homes are often smaller than UAE homes, and many people discover after arrival that the big majlis sofa or the huge bedroom set does not fit the new house. Measure your UK rooms before deciding what to ship; a ten-cubic-metre shared shipment may be enough instead of a full container.

Shipping time from the UAE to the UK

Method Approximate time Best for Notes
Sea, full container (FCL) 4–6 weeks port to port A full home, large cargo, or a car with furniture Add clearance days and the road leg
Sea, shared container (LCL) About 5–8 weeks Part of a home or a few items Priced per cubic metre, with extra time for consolidation
Air 3–6 days door to door Papers, clothes, urgent and light items Not for furniture

Times are approximate and change with sailing schedules. UK clearance usually takes a few working days when the ToR1 paperwork is ready, and longer if an inspection or a missing document comes up.

Air freight from the UAE to the UK

Air suits what you need in the first weeks before the container lands: winter clothes, school papers, a work laptop or samples for a British client. Shipments leave Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah for Heathrow, Manchester, East Midlands or Stansted, then go by road to the address.

  • Priced by actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher (length × width × height in cm ÷ 6000).
  • Furniture does not suit air because of its size.
  • Lithium batteries, liquids and perfumes are restricted, and the team checks them before booking.
  • Personal effects sent by air can fall under the same ToR1 relief if they are included in the application.

Packing that survives British damp and cold

This is where shipping to the UK differs from other routes. The furniture leaves an air-conditioned home in the UAE, spends weeks in a steel container passing through Red Sea heat, then lands at a cold, damp port. That swing makes moisture condense on the inside walls of the container, and if wood is wrapped directly in plastic the moisture stays trapped against it and mould spots appear within weeks. Delivery day is often rainy too, with the furniture carried from the truck to the door in the wet.

  • Paper or moving blankets on wood first, then plastic over them, never plastic straight on the surface.
  • Moisture absorbers inside the container and in wardrobes and drawers.
  • Rugs cleaned and fully dried before rolling, and leather sofas covered in breathable fabric.
  • Appliances drained of water and ice two days before packing.
  • Waterproof covers for pieces carried from the truck to the house on delivery day.
  • Outdoor tools and garden furniture cleaned completely of soil, as the UK is strict about soil and plants.
  • Wooden crates made from treated timber stamped ISPM 15.

Delivery in London and UK cities

City Usual port Delivery note
London London Gateway or Felixstowe A council parking permit is needed on most streets
Manchester Felixstowe or Liverpool Terraced houses and narrow side streets
Birmingham Felixstowe or Southampton Medium road distance from the ports
Leeds and Sheffield Felixstowe Flats in older converted buildings
Glasgow and Edinburgh Liverpool or Felixstowe, then by road Stone tenements with shared staircases
Bristol and Cardiff Southampton Steep, narrow streets in older districts

Terraced houses and parking for the truck

Many British homes are terraced, in a single row, with a narrow front door and a steep internal staircase that a large sofa or a full wardrobe struggles to pass. The street outside is usually lined with parked cars, and in London and many other cities stopping a truck outside the house needs a parking bay suspension from the local council, requested days before delivery. A long container cannot enter most of these streets at all, so we unload it at a nearby warehouse and deliver in a smaller van.

Measure doors and stairs

The front door width and the turn of the staircase decide what goes in whole and what must be dismantled.

Parking permit

We give you the delivery date early so you can request the permit, or we arrange it with you.

Flats without lifts

Older buildings converted into flats often have no lift, and the floor level is part of the cost.

Back garden

Sometimes large pieces are easier to bring in through the garden gate than the front door.

Commercial goods to the UK

The UK importer needs an EORI number starting with GB, and declarations are made through the UK customs system with a commodity code for each item. Duty is charged under the UK tariff, then 20% VAT on most goods. Prepare a clear commercial invoice, a packing list with weights and volumes, and a certificate of origin if your product needs one.

A common mistake is sending goods in the name of someone with no EORI number, which leaves the container at the port for days while storage charges build up. Before shipping, confirm the importer’s name and number, that the invoice description matches what is in the cartons, and who pays duty and VAT on arrival: you or your UK customer. We agree these details before loading.

Car shipping from the UAE to the UK

The car goes by RoRo or inside a container. In the UAE you need an export certificate from the traffic authority and a clearance letter from the bank if it is financed. In the UK, customs must usually be notified of the car’s arrival through NOVA within 14 days, then it is registered with the vehicle licensing agency. A car you have owned for 6 months and bring with your move may fall under ToR1 relief. A GCC-spec car, however, often needs proof of compliance or an approval test, headlight adjustment for driving on the left, and a speedometer showing miles. Left-hand-drive cars are allowed, but daily driving in the UK is harder. We check all of this before booking and never ship a car until we know it can be registered.

Prohibited and restricted items for the UK

  • Firearms, bladed weapons and self-defence sprays.
  • Meat, dairy and their products from outside the UK.
  • Plants, soil and seeds without a certificate.
  • Products of protected animals such as ivory and some skins without permits.
  • Counterfeit goods and medicines without a prescription.
  • By air: loose lithium batteries, perfumes and flammable liquids.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from the UAE to the UK

How long does shipping from the UAE to the UK take?

By sea about 4 to 6 weeks port to port, then clearance and the road leg. By air roughly 3 to 6 days door to door.
